Anthony Swann became the first African American sitting teacher in Virginia to be appointed to the Board of Education in 2021 by Governor Ralph Northam. Anthony has been in education for 19 years as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, an assistant principal, and now serves as the principal of Meadow View Elementary School in Henry County, Virginia. In 2018, he began a program entitled “Guys with Ties” to teach boys the importance of honesty, integrity, and character inside and outside of the classroom. He was elected by his peers to be the Teacher of the Year at Rocky Mount Elementary in 2020-2021, later selected to be the Teacher of the Year for Franklin County Public Schools for 2020-2021, then chosen to be the 2021 Region 6 Teacher of the Year for Virginia as well as the 2021 Virginia State Teacher of the Year. Mr. Swann has had the privilege of teaching every elementary grade except kindergarten. His experience also includes two years in North Carolina. Mr. Swann earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Averett University. He later earned a Master of Education in educational leadership from Regent University. Mr. Swann and his wife, Jasmine, reside in Roanoke, VA.
